EXAMPLES OF VOLUNTEER/INTERN OPPORTUNITIES

 

ENVIRONMENTAL PUBLIC HEALTH

Volunteers are needed in various operations of the division. Duties may include data entry, filing, typing, copying/scanning and special projects working with staff and/or outside agencies developing and implementing innovative ideas to help improve areas dealing with food safety, occupational health, drinking water, swimming pool safety, lead hazard control and neighborhood nuisance for the residents of Harris County.

MOSQUITO CONTROL

We need volunteers with a biology background to assist in maintaining laboratory mosquito colonies for insecticide resistance testing in the field and the laboratory.

PUBLIC HEALTH CLINICS
Volunteers are also needed to assist with data entry; remind patients of appointments and perform other clerical duties; provide interpreter services (many languages needed). With the right skills or experience you can assist with Health Education activities.

REFUGEE HEALTH SCREENING PROGRAM

We perform initial health screenings on refugees arriving from all parts of the world.  Volunteer interpreters are needed who are fluent in English and any of the following languages:  Arabic, Burmese, Burundi, Farsi, French, Spanish, Swahili or Vietnamese

OPERATIONS & FINANCE
Volunteers are also needed in Administrative Services where you will receive valuable experience by performing a variety of clerical tasks for administrators and program coordinators. Work in areas such as Nursing, Nutrition Services, Dental Health, Epidemiology, Health Education, Environmental & Consumer Health, Human Resources, and computer help desk services.

VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH
You can help walk and feed adoption animals; take puppies to nursing homes in the North and Eastern areas of the county; counsel the public on adoptions; assist Animal Control Officers or Health Educators; assist with data entry or other clerical work.

WIC - WOMEN, INFANTS, AND CHILDREN NUTRITION PROGRAM
Assist with data entry and perform other clerical duties.

OFFICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION

Assist with campaign and health communication activities and the development of written materials; research resources and identify grant funding for specific projects; and update and maintain a database of public agencies, private entities, and community-based organizations.  Requires clerical duties and computers skills with knowledge of Microsoft Professional Office Suite.
