BIOLOGICAL POLLUTANTS -animal dander, dust
mites and cockroach parts, fungi (molds), mildew, infectious
agents (bacteria or viruses), cat saliva, rodent droppings, and
pollen
Biological
pollutants are in every home and are hard to get rid of. Two
conditions are essential to support biological growth: nutrients
and moisture.
Sources: Wet or
moist walls, ceilings, carpets, furniture, poorly maintained
humidifiers and air conditioners, bedding, household pets,
firewood, house plants, water leaks around tubs and sinks, dust
and dirt.
Health Effects: Eye, nose, and throat
irritation, shortness of breath, itching, coughing, dizziness,
lethargy, fever, digestive problems, allergic reactions, asthma,
humidifier fever, influenza and other infectious diseases.
Remediation
- Install and use exhaust fans vented to outdoors in kitchens
and bathrooms. Vent clothes dryers to outdoors
- Repair leaks and seepage
- Maintain routine household cleaning and dusting regularly.
- Empty water trays in dehumidifiers and refrigerators
frequently.
- Clean and dry or remove water-damaged carpets, ceiling
tiles, and furniture.
- Change central air conditioning and heating filters monthly
or as needed; clean coils and incline drain pans
- Clean air ducts every 3-5 years
- Ventilate attic and crawlspaces
- Wash bedding and soft toys in hot water min. 130°f to kill
dust mites
- provide a vapor barrier (plastic sheeting) over dirt in
crawlspaces or between concrete floor and carpeting to prevent
moisture problems
- Increase air circulation by using fans, move furniture from
wall corners, open doors between rooms including closets
- Remove visible mold and clean surfaces with a mild bleach
solution
- Remove organic debris and bird droppings away from fresh
air supply vents
- Eliminate indoor insects/pests and remove droppings etc.
