Tobacco Prevention & Cessation
Educational Campaigns
The following campaigns
are utilized to educate communities in Harris
County on tobacco prevention, cessation, and secondhand smoke
exposure.
Tobacco is Foul
is a campaign
that targets upper elementary and middle
school students; kids who are most at risk for becoming tobacco
users. The goal of the campaign is to counteract tobacco myths and
teach kids to change their attitude about tobacco. They learn: 1)
Tobacco does gross things to them and 2) Tobacco won’t help them be
the person they want to be.
The spokesperson for the campaign is the DUCK and kids find his
”Tobacco is Foul” message on TV spots, radio spots, on the web and
at media events.

Worth It?
is a campaign
that was created to educate teens and young adults
about the Texas Tobacco Laws and the dangers of tobacco use. It’s
against the law for someone under 18 to purchase, posses or use
tobacco products, yet 9 out of 10 people who are smoking as adults
began before age 18.
The strategy of the campaign is to focus on the legal and physical
consequences of tobacco while using straightforward language. When
teens find out they can be fined $250, lose their license, must
perform community service and must attend tobacco awareness classes,
they will ask themselves, “Is tobacco worth it?”

"Yes You Can" is a campaign to help people quit smoking. Quitting
takes practice. On average, it takes several tries for someone to
quit using tobacco. The biggest obstacle to quitting is lack of
support, but with Yes You Can, quitters learn that help is all
around them.
"Yes You Can" focuses on educating clinicians to identify tobacco
users and motivate them to quit. Physicians and other clinicians
have a unique opportunity to help their patients quit because only 5%
of smokers who try to quit each year succeed on their own, but if
they are advised to quit by a doctor, the success rate doubles.

The ShareAir campaign educates the public about the health hazards
of secondhand smoke (SHS). SHS is more than just a nuisance, it
kills the same way cigarettes do: heart disease, cancer, emphysema.
Children who are exposed have a greater risk of getting asthma,
pneumonia and ear infections.
Spending 2 hours in a smoke-filled room is the same as smoking
almost 4 cigarettes. That means people who work an 8 hour shift in a
smoky restaurant or bar, breathe in the equivalent of almost a pack
a day.
The good news? SHS exposure is preventable. ShareAir encourages
people to support smoke-free environments, and promotes policy
changes regarding smoking in the workplace because we all have the
right to breathe clean air.
