Refugee Health
Screening Program
The Harris County Public Health and
Environmental Services (HCPHES) Refugee Health Screening Program (RHSP) contracts with the Texas Department of State
Health Services (DSHS) to oversee refugee health screening in
Harris County. Refugees (and asylum seekers) are officially
recognized individuals by the United States Government. These
individuals arrive in Harris County every year. Texas is the
third largest refugee resettlement state in the United States.
HCPHES RHSP currently serves as the largest refugee health
screening program in Texas. View the
HCPHES RHSP arrival
statistics for the 2007 program year.
The HCPHES RHSP provides medical screenings
to refugees. These screenings include: a physical examination,
skin testing for tuberculosis, laboratory and parasite testing,
and required immunizations. The RHSP also ensures that refugees
who have medical problems are cared for appropriately.
