Salmonella in Eggs

Salmonella -  Recall of Shell Eggs

Currently, there is a nationwide recall of shell eggs from multiple entities. The eggs are packaged under different brand names and distributed nationwide. The current recall is part of an ongoing and intense investigation by FDA, CDC and state and local partners into the cause of recent cases of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE).

The FDA and CDC are advising consumers not to eat any recalled eggs. Consumers should throw away the product or return them to the store for a refund because they may cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly, and others with weakened immune systems.

Salmonella Enteritidis usually causes fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea beginning 12 to 72 hours after consuming a contaminated food or beverage. Most people recover without medical treatment but some people may become ill enough to require medical treatment and hospitalization. Persons who have symptoms of Salmonella should contact their healthcare provider and let them know that you may have eaten eggs contaminated with salmonella.
