The Healthy Places /
Healthy Environment Program participates in the three
core functions of public health—assessment, policy
development, and assurance. These core public health
functions serve as a broad framework for us to describe
the scope of our activities. The “Assessment” core
function of public health is defined as follows:
Assessment means to
regularly and systematically collect, assemble, analyze
and make available information on the health of the
community, including statistics on health status,
community health needs, and epidemiologic and other
studies of health problems.
The Environmental
Health Assessment activities include:
1. Assessment of
environmental characteristics of parks, hiking and
biking trails around the HCPHES clinics.
2. Assessment of the
number of miles of public walking trails, designated
bike lanes, and their locations.
3. Identification of
target areas of unhealthy homes for program
implementation.
4. Identification of
risk factors and behaviors associated with unhealthy and
unsafe homes.
