April Pools Day is  an event to promote drowning prevention strategies that help reduce drowning deaths and submersion injuries throughout Harris County by providing water safety awareness events and activities at the family and community level.

It's easy to plan and host an April Pools Day event!

Here's some tips to get you started:

  1. Partner with other local agencies or organizations in your community to maximize resources and increase attention and publicity for your April Pools Day event.

  2. Choose a date and location to kick off your water safety awareness day.

  3. Be creative!   Make this event a fun learning opportunity to provide critical information to help keep children and their families stay safe.

  4. Promote a water safety awareness event or presentation at a local school, library, health clinic, or neighborhood center.

  5. Display and distribute drowning prevention materials at local events(e.g., baseball, soccer games, Parent Teacher Organization (PTO’s), and Home Owners Association (HOA) meetings, children’s library, etc.)

  6. Ready, Set, Go!  We value your feedback and encourage you to share any comments or suggestions that will enhance efforts to promote drowning prevention awareness.  Please take a few minutes to complete this online survey

Promoting your water safety awareness event:

  • Know your audience, your program target population.

  • Plan early for every aspect of your program.

  • Emphasize the importance and purpose of your program.

  • Publicize early and often– with flyers, posters, postcards, announcements in church, school bulletins or neighborhood newsletters.

  • Coordinate  your event with another to reach more people.

  • Facilitate community support by involving them in the process from
    beginning to end.

  • Keep the momentum– continue water safety awareness outreach
    activities throughout the spring/summer season.

Here are a few examples of fun activities to help promote water safety:

  • Organize a water safety poster contest

  • Post information in teacher and other school staff lounges

  • Sponsor a community breakfast or lunch to educate parents/adults
    about water safety.

  • Get students to design water safety awareness bulletin boards or other displays.

  • Choose a safety quote or slogan to bring attention to  your event.
