Plan a Water
Safety Event in
Your Community

April Pools Day is an event to
promote drowning prevention strategies that help
reduce drowning deaths and submersion injuries
throughout Harris County by providing water safety
awareness events and activities at the family and
community level.
It's easy to plan and host an April
Pools Day event!
Here's some tips to get
you started:

Partner
with other local agencies or
organizations in your community to
maximize resources and increase attention and
publicity for your April Pools Day event.

Choose a date and location to kick off your
water safety awareness day.
-
Be creative! Make this event a fun learning
opportunity to provide critical information to
help keep children and their families stay safe.
-
Promote a water safety awareness event or
presentation at a local school, library, health
clinic, or neighborhood center.
-
Display and distribute drowning prevention
materials at local events(e.g.,
baseball, soccer games, Parent Teacher
Organization (PTO’s), and Home Owners
Association (HOA) meetings, children’s library,
etc.)

Promoting your water safety awareness event:

Know your
audience, your program target population.

Plan early for every aspect of your program.

Emphasize the importance and purpose of your
program.

Publicize early and often– with flyers, posters,
postcards, announcements in church, school
bulletins or neighborhood newsletters.

Coordinate your event with another to reach
more people.

Facilitate community support by involving them
in the process from
beginning to end.

Keep the momentum– continue water safety
awareness outreach
activities throughout the spring/summer season.

Here are a few examples of fun activities to help
promote water safety:

Organize a water safety poster contest

Post information in teacher and other school staff lounges

Sponsor a community breakfast or lunch to educate parents/adults
about water safety.

Get students to design water safety awareness bulletin boards or
other displays.

Choose a
safety quote or slogan
to bring attention to your event.
