We all have a need to “fit in”
or be accepted by others. Sometimes it can lead to inappropriate
behavior like bullying and harassment. A bully is someone who
threatens, hits, intimidates, teases and taunts, spreads rumors or
encourages other to reject or exclude someone. Cyberbullying is
similar to other types of bullying, except it takes place online
through chat rooms, emails, instant messaging (IM), websites, or
through cell phone text messages.
Aggressive people of all ages
are an unpleasant fact of life.
Some bullies are just looking for
attention. They might think bullying is a way to be popular or
to get what they want. Most bullies are trying to make
themselves feel more important when they pick on someone else,
it makes them feel big and powerful.
It’s important to remember 3
things:
1. You
Are
Not
Alone!
2. It’s
Not
Your Fault!
3. You
Can
Do
Something About It!
Learning how to cope with people
who bully and harass is an important skill. Here are some ways
to protect yourself from bullies:
· Talk
to your parents or an adult you can trust, such as a teacher, school
counselor, or principal.
· Stay
calm, hold the anger.
· Act
confident. Hold your head up, stand up straight, make eye contact,
and walk confidently.
· Do
not resort to violence.
· Ignore
the bully and walk away.
